Creative Craft Room Organization Ideas
Two weeks left, and hopefully we've gotten rid of some clutter and enhanced other people's lives. In February I posted a blog of my updated craft room. It is now 99.9% finished (I have some shelving that needs to be done), and I thought I'd share some of my creative organization ideas I tapped into to make it just right.
I'm loving working in this space, and other than getting new flooring, it's all that and a bag of chips. So, take a tour with me of my craft room, and get some organization and storage ideas of your own.
1. The best part of my craft room was installing my peg board. I liked it so much I installed a second one last week. One keeps most of my paper crafting and misc items (note the fly swatter my husband thought would be helpful). The other keeps my sewing and embroidery items. I put up a curtain rod on top of my sewing pegboard that houses all my ribbon.
2. In the corner sits my Ikea Raskog metal rolling cart. Right now it's keeping my notecard supplies, extra cricut cutouts and my cricut cartridges that I no longer need. I also have several magnetic tins that store my glitter and small embellishments.
3. When we moved into this house, the previous owners had a drop leaf table that attached to the wall in the laundry room. It made a great addition to my craft room and is my "cricut station". I have all my pens, one of my paper cutters, and my cricut. Underneath it I bought a three drawer plastic cart for all my 12x12 paper. I didn't think I had enough paper to fill it, but I did. I had to leave my 8 1/2 x 11 paper in it's plastic container. I think I have more paper than I know what to do with.
4. When I started to sew and embroider, I never thought I'd have more than a dozen or so spools of thread. Now, I have more than 100, so I bought a handy thread holder, and it's another must have. It's not usually crooked, who knows what I was doing when I took the picture.
5. I'm big on plastic bins, totes, etc. for organization and storage. My crafting ribbon (not sewing ribbon that I have above my peg board) has it's own plastic bin and I ran the ribbon through the slots for easy access. I also used one and turned it on it's side for my toll paints.
6. I set up a table underneath the window for all my material cutting and laying out of projects. I have scissors, cutting mat, and notions all within reach. I also set up my chordless glue gun and hot crystal gun on the table as well. I put the table up on the extenders to make it counter top height, and it gives me lots of space to layout big projects, cut patterns, and cut fabric. Underneath I have a fabric bin that stores all my quilting, batting, and filler. I put a small metal shelf that is now keeping all my nursery fabrics for the burp cloths, bibs, and receiving blankets I sell on Etsy. It also houses any tshirts for embroidering or for iron on.
7. Next to the table I have another metal shelf where I put all my patterns, tea towels for for embroidering, and other misc stuff. Next to that are the shelves where I keep my fabric. This is where I want to put permanent shelving.
I saw a great idea on another post to "file" your fabric. I keep all of my cricut vinyl and iron on transfer in my filing cabinet. In my credenza I have all of our household files, but I think I just might rehome those files, and start "filing" my fabric.
8. I rearranged my desk so that my sewing machine is on my desk to give me more workspace so that I'm not always having to get up and run over to the table after I get things cut out. I moved my PC over to the side table that held my sewing machine. Just that minor adjustment has helped.
9. On my desk I found a great carry all where I put all of my stabilizer. It's the perfect size. Behind my desk underneath my sewing pegboard, I have a bookcase that I use to put some of my ministry books, sewing notions, stencils, rubber stamping supplies, and other misc stuff that's easy to grab and get when I'm working.
I told Dave that this is the best craft room/workspace l'll ever have. Usually, my craft room is in one of the spare bedrooms, so my area is an absolute luxury. Now that I have it set up the way I like it, I'm in there everyday creating, writing, and crafting.
It really how much of a difference having a designated space that is well organized makes. If you have any organization tips to share, please do so. Or, post pics of your crafting/office space. We'd love to see it!
