10 Ways to Declutter by Unplugging - Day 20 40 Bags in 40 Days Challenge
Yesterday I posted about having to unplug not by choice. After having no Internet/Technology for a few days, I rather liked it. I thought what a great focus in our declutter challenge. Even though we may not have any physical bags to donate to charity, maybe it can free up some time to be able to help someone else. So, here are ten ways you can declutter your life by unplugging.
1. Get out into nature
Nature is such a great place to relax and enjoy. If you feel the need to photograph it, bring a camera, not your phone! Go on a hike, bike ride or even a picnic! These memories are for you and the ones you’re sharing it with, not your instagram/FaceBoo followers! Go camping for a full weekend without technology. Take a few board games, puzzles, books, etc.
2. Read a book
This is one of my favorites! We always say “oh I wish I had time to read more”, however you do have the time, you just need to manage it better! I love books and will typically read an hour before I go to bed to get my brain ready for rest. I've always been able to get lost in a book. Here's my exception to the unplugged rule - I find it perfectly acceptable to download books for your kindle if that's your preference.
3. Create something
Whether it’s a painting or wall hanging or whatever, spend some time showing your creative side! I've been getting into sewing placemats, making vinyl decor, and creating lots of embroidery projects. I've even decided to help out a friend do her wedding invitations, and I couldn't be more excited. You are being productive and creative, maybe get your littles to join you and color together. Your imagination is endless!
4. Tea or Lunch Date
Call an old friend and schedule a time to spend together. Agree to either leave or turn off your phones so that you can have a full one on one time! Maybe even make it a weekly get together.
5. Exercise
Get out and move, go to a yoga class or ride your bike for an hour or two. Move your body and create some awesome endorphins! It's amazing how accomplished you will feel after exercising. I have found that if I get my 2 mile walk in with the boys (my Corgwyn - Buddy and Ben) earlier rather than later, I'm more productive throughout the entire day.
6. Pray or Meditate
This is a really important one for me. When I am able to tune out all the stress and distractions I am able to tune into the divine. I am really able to get in touch with my spiritual side and you should too. I have to admit though, when I was first without Internet, I actually didn't do my devotions for the first two days. It was because I wasn't able to connect on social media with my accountability partner. When I got back on FaceBook and read her posts for our readings, I was smacked right between the eyes. I'm always lamenting that I don't have enough time to spend time with God, yet when I had that time, I neglected it. So, my plan has been to get up, read my short devotional, go on the walk with the dogs while walking I pray, and then I come home and while eating my breakfast I do my Bible Study. It is going to become my daily habit.
7. Spread the word
Tell others about your decision to be unplugged more, and make sure they know that haven't fallen off of the face of the earth but you are simply making a life choice to unplug for a day each week. Maybe even ask them to do the same! Remember the Internet and Technology is just a tool and not a way of life.
Other times to stay unplugged:
1. At the table This is a time to reflect on the day with your family members and to build a stronger relationship with each other. Since we don't have children, my husband and I have gotten into the habit of being on our tablets and phones during meal times. We've decided to start small, and we have agreed that we will eat dinner at the table at least three times a week, and maintain a no technology rule.
2. After 9:00 pm Once the sun leaves us for the day, our brains need to start thinking about rest. There are many studies showing that the blue light causes many sleep problems and this is why we should unplug and start relaxing after 9 pm. Take a detox bath or read a book next to a lamp or candle.
3. When having guests Place your phone in your study or bedroom away from your eyes and hands. Guests don’t want to come visit if they are being ignored.
4. Family Nights
Take at least one night a week to spend unplugged as a family. You can play board games, do crafts, bake, devote time to an activity or charity. The possibilities are endless. For parents and grandparents, your children deserve to have our utmost attention as well as a full and meaningful childhood. Let them grow up seeing our faces and set an example of how to use technology in a healthy way. Show them how to really enjoy life, interact with others, and learn new activities.
